Quick Overview
Details
A high quality solvent based silicone resin solution for the surface treatment of masonry to protect against penetrating damp. The success or failure of Exterior Water Repellent treatments depend on applying sufficient solution in a uniform coating to the surface.
The treatment can be applied by various methods including brush, lambs wool roller or coarse spray. Brush or lambs wool treatment is generally used. For larger areas use a knapsack sprayer or piston pump and spray lance. Spray pressure should be a slow as possible.
Treatment should start at the highest point working form side to side whilst allowing a ‘run down’ of up to 12”. Poorly absorbent dense surfaces will require only one application. Highly absorbent surfaces are recommended to have two flood coats applied wet on wet.
Exterior Water Repellent will become effective following the evaporation of the carrying solvents. The depth of penetration will depend on the type of substrate but will generally be between 4-6mm. Treated surfaces will remain permeable to water vapour. The rate of evaporation is not prevented but retarded allowing the surface to ‘breathe’.
Preparatory Works
Treatment should only be carried out to clean sound surfaces. Cracks, mortar joints should be repaired prior to treatment (allow 2-3 weeks before treatment). Dirty surfaces should be cleaned with acid or alkaline brick cleaners. Grit blasting or steam cleaning may also be necessary.
Protect glass surfaces. Wooden or metal window and door frames should be covered before treatment to prevent the necessity for the removal of silicone splashes. Such splashes can be removed with white spirit.
Protect plants from solvent carriers by covering with plastic sheeting.
Exterior Water repellent is flammable: take relevant safety precautions.
