An Introduction to Decking and Timber Care in Wet Weather
For a nation which experiences mixed fortunes on the weather front, the people of Britain certainly enjoy their outside space. Whether it is a small patio, decking or a large garden, the amount of time we spend outdoors directly influences our happiness and sense of general wellbeing.
Many people invest in wooden furniture for the summer season – much of which has to be looked after carefully or brought indoors in bad weather. In this post, we look at how to treat your timber during the autumn and winter seasons, and how best to protect it from a range of potentially ruinous issues.
What Happens to Decking Without Wet Weather Protection?
Without an element of protection from the weather, you’re likely to see a degradation of quality in a very short space of time. The wood will quickly turn grey, and if left in this state will end up cracking, warping and becoming damp and damaged beyond repair.
Which Decking Treatment Product to Use?
Here at Permagard we stock a number of different products including wood oil for your outside furniture. They come in different forms, but all work to provide a waterproof layer and safeguard against heavy rain…hardwoods are largely oil based, and it is recommended that if wet weather is forecast a waterproof layer be applied every three months.
How to Apply the Timber Treatment
It’s important to apply the products in the right way, at the right time of year and in the right conditions. Proper application of the wood treatments will increase their usefulness and the timber’s longevity. Before you start, find a clean, clear space and if possible ensure it is under cover or in a garage. Leave to dry, and repeat the process after periods of heavy rain or a few months.
Here at Permagard we offer a wide range of Timber Treatment – more information can be found on the specific section of our website:
