A high quality 3mm mesh membrane designed for damp proofing walls above ground. The mesh provides an excellent key for dot and dab plaster board or direct rendering.
3mm Damp Proof Mesh Membrane - 40m²
PermaSEAL 3 Mesh Membrane is a high quality meshed membrane, designed for damp proofing walls internally above ground. Once the underlying damp issue is resolved, it creates a physical barrier to prevent further damage and salt contamination. The mesh provides an excellent key for a range of finishes.
Mesh Membrane for Damp Walls
PermaSEAL 3 is the ideal mesh membrane for damp walls. It is specifically designed to be applied to damp walls to isolate them from new finishes. PermaSEAL wall mesh membranes are impervious to moisture and moisture vapour. This means they create a barrier between the old surface and your new finish. This effectively isolates damp walls and prevents any new salt deposits on the surface plaster and damage to decoration.
Salt Contaminated Walls and Damp Proofing
PermaSEAL 3 Mesh membrane is the ideal product for isolating salt contaminated surfaces. These surfaces can often appear damp in periods of high humidity. The hygroscopic salts that are contained in the surface attract the damp in the air to the surface giving the appearance of a darker, damp patch. This is often misdiagnosed as penetrating or rising damp. The membrane simply isolates the background contaminated substrate from the new finish alleviating any signs of damp.
Uses of PermaSEAL 3 Mesh Membrane
- Damp proof mesh membrane above the ground internally
- Isolation membrane for salt contaminated surfaces
If you are suffering from high salt tides, we stock a 1.2 metre mesh membrane.
Benefits of PermaSEAL 3 Mesh
The PermaSEAL 3 is highly resistant to water, alkalis, and saline solutions, and is guaranteed against deterioration for 30 years. It also provides the following key benefits:
3mm Stud Profile
Having a 3mm stud means that PermaSEAL 3 mesh damp proofing membrane only has an overall thickness of 3.5mm. This makes it the preferred meshed membrane when space is at a premium.
PermaSEAL 3 Mesh has an integrated high quality meshed surface which provides an excellent key for lime mortars, renders, plasters or dabbed plasterboard.
Installing a mesh membrane
The mesh membrane installation is straightforward. Once the underlying damp issue has been resolved, you can simply apply the mesh membrane to the wall in the following way:
- Clean the substrate to obtain as flat a surface as possible. Remove any damaged, loose or crumbling plaster.
- Cut the membrane to size with a sharp knife or scissors.
- Fix the 3mm membrane (with the mesh facing outward) to the surface with plugs. It can be fitted horizontally or vertically.
Jointing - The 3mm mesh membrane can be easily bent around corners as it is a very flexible material. Alternatively, it can be butt jointed and sealed with PermaSEAL Fleece Overstrip.
Finishing - Plasterboard panels can be fixed to the membrane by the dot and dab method (minimum of 50% board coverage with the dab adhesive), giving a dry surface ready for immediate decoration.

What is a mesh membrane?
A mesh membrane is a damp proofing or cavity drain membrane sheet made from high density polyethylene. Its outward facing mesh surface provides a key to allow you to plaster, render or dab plasterboard directly onto the membrane. This means it can be directly finished without running the risk of plaster and mortar being spoiled as the wall dries.
What’s the difference between a mesh membrane and clear damp proof membrane?
Once fitted, you can directly plaster or render over the top of a mesh membrane as the mesh provides an excellent key. A clear damp proof membrane requires battening or an independent timber wall or metal track system built in front before plasterboard is fitted.
Which way around does a mesh membrane go on a wall?
You should fix our PermaSEAL 3 Mesh Membrane to the wall with the meshed surface facing outwards.
I’m installing a mesh membrane on an old/wet brick wall and the plugs are not fixing, what can I do?
We recommend that you check that the wall in question is suitable to accommodate a membrane and its plugs prior to purchasing one. If the substrate is of poor quality i.e. friable or crumbling, then the wall might not be suitable for membrane fixing. However, if the masonry is in reasonable condition, repointing any cracks or voids or even applying a coat of sand/cement render can give more stability to the plugs.
What render can I lay over the top of a mesh membrane?
The outward facing surface of a mesh membrane will accept sand/cement/lime, PermaSEAL Renovating Plaster, Tarmac Whitewall One Coat or a hydraulic lime mix. For the sand/cement option, careful consideration must be taken to reduce cracking. The curing time for this method between coats is a minimum of 7 days. Please refer to the installation guides for more detailed guidance.
How long do mesh membranes last?
Mesh membranes have a life expectancy of at least 50 years.
Can I put a mesh damp proof membrane underneath LVT / floor finishes?
No, a mesh membrane is for use on walls only. We stock floor membranes that are suitable for laying beneath plywood, OSB or screeds and then subsequent floor finishes can go over this.
