A professional masonry protection cream that provides long-lasting water repellency to brickwork and façades. Outstanding beading, penetration and breathability.
Masonry Protection Cream
Microshield Ultra is a water-based masonry waterproofing cream that provides long-lasting and reliable water repellency to mineral surfaces such as brickwork and natural stone. It offers comprehensive protection against structural damage caused by water and moisture, spanning everything from spalling to efflorescence to moss and lichen growth.
As a professional product, it contains a high concentration of organically modified silane and siloxane that penetrate deep into the substrate (up to 13mm in brick). These active ingredients line the pores of the building material with silicone, creating a durable bond without blocking the pores completely. This prevents water from wetting the material while maintaining water-vapour permeability and overall ‘breathability’.
Microshield Ultra’s cream consistency means that it stays in contact longer with the substrate without run off, allowing for deep penetration. This imparts a beading effect and protects mineral surfaces for longer, dramatically reducing maintenance and repair costs.
Uses of Microshield Ultra
Microshield Ultra masonry protection cream ensures a significant reduction in water absorption, outstanding penetration and beading effect on most kinds of mineral substrates, including:
- Bricks and clinker
- Natural stone
- Porous concrete / concrete
Benefits of Microshield Ultra
Microshield Ultra delivers a number of benefits for professionals. Regardless of the scale of your project, it provides reliable masonry protection while preserving the water vapour permeability of the mineral surface. It does so without affecting its appearance.
A strong beading effect will develop on the mineral surface within 7 to 10 days of treatment. The beading effect lasts between 2-3 years depending on the substrate condition and exposure to weather conditions. Water simply beads and runs off once Microshield Ultra has been applied, helping maintain the building material’s natural moisture balance.
Improved Thermal Performance
Damp facades have reduced insulating capacity which leads to increased heat loss - just 4% humidity in the masonry decreases the insulating capacity to 50%. Surfaces treated with Microshield Ultra have a reduced water uptake by at least 80% therefore keeping the thermal performance of the wall at a permanent high level, saving the occupants energy and money as well as improving the indoor environment.
Reduces maintenance and repair costs
Using Microshield Ultra for your project reduces the need for ongoing maintenance and repair. This can save thousands on big projects. It makes the surface easier to clean, enhances the value of the property and prevents common structural issues.
Microshield Ultra provides protection to the building substrate for between 25+ years. It has been thoroughly tested to ensure its performance is maintained for decades.
How to apply Masonry Protection Cream
Microshield Ultra is designed for easy and effective application at scale.
The mineral surfaces must be in sound condition with any structural defects resolved, including cracks, cracked joints, defective connections, rising damp and hygroscopic moisture. The surface should also be dry and free from dust, dirt, moss and algae.
Any contaminated substrates should be cleaned in conjunction with BS 8221-1:2012. It is important when cleaning the substrate not to use detergents as these can interfere with the hydrophobic effect of Microshield Ultra.
We recommend testing a small, representative area to ensure Microshield Ultra is not repelled and that the finished surface appearance is as expected.
Applying Microshield Ultra
Microshield Ultra Cream can be applied in a single-step by roller, brush or airless spraying equipment at a rate of 0.2l/m². A single application of Microshield Ultra at this rate is generally sufficient to provide outstanding masonry protection.
Due to its creamy consistency, you can simply apply the masonry waterproofing cream onto walls and overhangs without any dripping or run-off loss. The milky-white cream disappears without leaving any residue on the surface within one hour.
After approximately two hours (@20°C) the application is resistant to light rain (this will be extended for colder conditions). The water beading effect will develop within seven days of treatment. Microshield Ultra is able to withstand even extreme weather conditions without impacting its performance.
Microshield Ultra should not be applied in cold conditions or when rain is expected within 24 hours.
Note: Temperature of the material, air and substrate: from min. +5 °C to max. +25 °C for a minimum of 24 hours.

Can Microshield Ultra Masonry Protection Cream be applied to a painted surface?
The Microshield Ultra cannot be applied to a painted surface. The paint will act as a barrier to the deeply penetrating cream hence the cream must be applied directly to the untreated substrate. The Microshield Ultra can be overcoated with paint once the product has cured after 28 days.
Can you use Microshield Ultra on a shed?
Microshield Ultra is designed for use on masonry only, such as brick and stone walls, and rendered facades. To protect wood from the elements, we recommend our Microshield Wood Protector.
Will Microshield Ultra prevent moss growth?
A successful application of Microshield Ultra will deny moss and algae a constant water source therefore preventing its growth. Make sure all moss is removed from the surface prior to applying Microshield Ultra. Any future dirt or pollutants will sit on the Microshield Ultra rather than getting ingrained in the substrate. This makes it much easier to clean off.
Can you apply paint over masonry treated with Microshield Ultra?
You can paint over masonry treated with Microshield Ultra once both coats have been applied and have had a chance to weather in over an 8 week period.
If Microshield Ultra seals outside brickwork, wouldn’t this cause condensation on the building’s interior?
Microshield Ultra allows the building to breathe, therefore helping to alleviate condensation build up. As no new rainwater can penetrate the exterior surface, the wall will eventually dry out which in turn will increase the internal surface temperature of the wall and lower the risk of condensation forming.
What makes Microshield Ultra different from other water repellent creams on the market?
Microshield Ultra is a high performance water repellent which has been tried and tested for over 10 years in the market. Used by professionals that require a trusted level of performance, the masonry water repellent cream has undergone thorough testing during and after the manufacturing process in Germany. The result of which gives you complete confidence in the product when comparing with various other creams.
How many coats of Microshield Ultra do I need to apply?
One coat is enough. In fact, two coats would be detrimental and potentially leave your wall with staining that is near impossible to remove.
How long will Microshield Ultra remain effective for?
Microshield Ultra will create an impermeable barrier to rain for a period between 20-30 years. Areas with extreme weather conditions can expect protection nearer the lower end of the range.
What surface area will 5 litres of Microshield Ultra cover?
Microshield Ultra coverage depends on the porosity and texture of the wall but as a guideline, an area of between 4-5m² can be covered per litre of Microshield Ultra. This means that 5 litres will cover between 20-25m² on a flat rendered wall.
When is the best time to apply Microshield Ultra?
It is recommended that you apply Microshield Ultra after a dry spell of weather. The temperature should be between 5°C and 25°C. Not 5°C and falling.
Can I use Microshield Ultra on internal walls?
No, Microshield Ultra can only be used externally as a water repellent. It may be more suitable to use PermaSEAL Damp Proof Paint for internal wall waterproofing.
How do I know when to re-apply Microshield Ultra?
Once the previous coat has weathered off, it's safe to apply another coat of Microshield Ultra. We wouldn't really suggest you need to recoat Microshield Ultra before 20 years, unless the wall is exposed to extreme weathering. In this case, maybe around the 18-20 year period, you could apply some of the cream to a smaller inconspicuous area to see if the wall accepts it and doesn't leave any white staining. Then you know you are safe to proceed but just be careful as different areas of the wall can weather at different rates.
