A professional water-based masonry waterproofing cream that provides long-lasting water repellency to brickwork and façades.
Masonry Protection Cream
Microshield Ultra is a water-based masonry waterproofing cream, designed to provide long-lasting and reliable water repellence. It imparts a strong beading effect to mineral substances such as brickwork and façades.
Microshield Ultra provides comprehensive protection for brickwork and façades against efflorescence and destruction by water soluble pollutants. It also protects against frost damage and the attack of micro organisms.
Surfaces treated with Microshield Ultra also benefit from improved thermal performance. Heat loss through “wet” walls is reduced, improving the indoor environment and saving valuable energy and money.
Benefits of Microshield Ultra
Microshield Ultra is a creamy impregnating agent, based on silanes and siloxanes. Our waterproofing cream protects the material while preserving the water vapour permeability. It doesn't impact the appearance of the material surface.
Water simply beads and runs off, and the material can maintain its natural moisture balance. The remarkable penetration of Microshield Ultra into the substrate guarantees exceptionally long-lasting and reliable protection from penetrating damp.
Microshield Ultra is suitable for use on most kinds of mineral substances for example:
- Bricks and clinker
- Natural stone
- Porous concrete
Substrates treated with Microshield Ultra will exhibit a strong beading effect. This develops within 7 to 10 days of treatment. The beading effect lasts between 2-3 years depending on the substrate condition and exposure to weather conditions.
Substrates to be treated must be in sound condition. Structural defects such as cracks, cracked joints, defective connections, rising damp and hygroscopic moisture must be remedied first.
Substrates to be treated should be dry and free from oil, grease, dust, dirt and biological growth (moss or algae). Any contaminated substrates should be cleaned in conjunction with BS8221-1:2000, “Code of practice for cleaning and surface repair of buildings. Cleaning of natural stones, brick, terracotta and concrete”. It is important when cleaning the substrate not to use detergents as these can interfere with the hydrophobic effect of Microshield Ultra.
Test a small, representative area to ensure the product is not repelled and also that the dry finished surface appearance is acceptable.
Applying Microshield Ultra
Microshield Ultra Cream can be applied by roller, brush or airless spraying at a rate of 0.2l/m². A single application of Microshield Ultra at this rate is generally sufficient. Due to its creamy consistency, you can simply apply the waterproofing cream onto walls and overhangs without dripping or running. The milky-white cream disappears without any residues left on the surface.
After approximately 2 hours (@ 20 degrees celsius) the application is rain tight (this will be extended for colder conditions), the water beading effect develops within 7 days of treatment. Microshield Ultra is able to withstand even extreme weather conditions without impacting its performance.
Microshield Ultra should not be applied in cold conditions when rain is expected within 24 - 48 hours.
NB: The substrate must be clean, dust free and dry. Temperature of the material, air and substrate: from min. +10 °C to max. +25 °C for a minimum of 24 hours.
- Clean and prepare substrate as above.
- Apply Microshield Ultra by brush to areas close to non-target surfaces (windows etc.)
- On larger areas, roller Microshield Ultra onto the substrate at a rate of 0.2l/m²
- Visibly check substrate for complete coverage, brush Microshield Ultra into any deep joints or voids that may have been missed.
- Leave Microshield Ultra to penetrate the substrate and develop beading effect.

Can Microshield Ultra Masonry Protection Cream be applied to a painted surface?
The Microshield Ultra cannot be applied to a painted surface. The paint will act as a barrier to the deeply penetrating cream hence the cream must be applied directly to the untreated substrate. The Microshield Ultra can be overcoated with paint once the product has cured after 28 days.
Can you use Microshield Ultra on a shed?
Microshield Ultra is designed for use on masonry only, such as brick and stone walls, and rendered facades. To protect wood from the elements, we recommend our Microshield Wood Protector.
Will Microshield Ultra prevent moss growth?
A successful application of Microshield Ultra will deny moss and algae a constant water source therefore preventing its growth. Make sure all moss is removed from the surface prior to applying Microshield Ultra. Any future dirt or pollutants will sit on the Microshield Ultra rather than getting ingrained in the substrate. This makes it much easier to clean off.
Can you apply paint over masonry treated with Microshield Ultra?
You can paint over masonry treated with Microshield Ultra once both coats have been applied and have had a chance to weather in over an 8 week period.
If Microshield Ultra seals outside brickwork, wouldn’t this cause condensation on the building’s interior?
Microshield Ultra allows the building to breathe, therefore helping to alleviate condensation build up. As no new rainwater can penetrate the exterior surface, the wall will eventually dry out which in turn will increase the internal surface temperature of the wall and lower the risk of condensation forming.
What makes Microshield Ultra different from other water repellent creams on the market?
Microshield Ultra is a high performance water repellent which has been tried and tested for over 10 years in the market. Used by professionals that require a trusted level of performance, the masonry water repellent cream has undergone thorough testing during and after the manufacturing process in Germany. The result of which gives you complete confidence in the product when comparing with various other creams.
How many coats of Microshield Ultra do I need to apply?
One coat is enough. In fact, two coats would be detrimental and potentially leave your wall with staining that is near impossible to remove.
How long will Microshield Ultra remain effective for?
Microshield Ultra will create an impermeable barrier to rain for a period between 20-30 years. Areas with extreme weather conditions can expect protection nearer the lower end of the range.
What surface area will 5 litres of Microshield Ultra cover?
Microshield Ultra coverage depends on the porosity and texture of the wall but as a guideline, an area of between 4-5m² can be covered per litre of Microshield Ultra. This means that 5 litres will cover between 20-25m² on a flat rendered wall.
When is the best time to apply Microshield Ultra?
It is recommended that you apply Microshield Ultra after a dry spell of weather. The temperature should be between 5°C and 25°C. Not 5°C and falling.
Can I use Microshield Ultra on internal walls?
No, Microshield Ultra can only be used externally as a water repellent. It may be more suitable to use PermaSEAL Damp Proof Paint for internal wall waterproofing.
