Masonry Protection Cream
Microshield Ultra is a water-based masonry waterproofing cream designed to impart long-lasting and reliable water repellence. This is combined with a strong beading effect to mineral substances such as brickwork and façades. The remarkable penetration of Microshield Ultra into the substrate guarantees exceptionally long-lasting and reliable protection from penetrating damp.
Microshield Ultra provides comprehensive protection for brickwork and façade against efflorescence and destruction by water soluble pollutants as well as against frost damage and the attack of micro organisms.
Surfaces treated with Microshield Ultra also benefit from improved thermal performance, reducing heat loss through “wet” walls, improving the indoor environment and saving valuable money.
How Microshield Ultra Works
Microshield Ultra is a creamy impregnating agent based on silanes and siloxanes. It protects the material while preserving the water vapour permeability, without visually affecting the material surface. Water simply beads and runs off, and the material can maintain its natural moisture balance.
Substrates treated with Microshield Ultra will exhibit a strong beading effect which develops within seven days of treatment. The beading effect will last between 2-3 years depending on the substrate condition and exposure to weather conditions.
What Surfaces can I use it on?
Microshield Ultra is suitable for use on most kinds of mineral substances including:
- Bricks and clinker
- Natural stone
- Porous concrete
Microshield Ultra is particularly suited to be used for concrete repair and remedial works.
Applying Microshield Masonry Protection Cream
Substrates to be treated must be in sound condition. Structural defects such as cracks, cracked joints, defective connections, rising damp and hygroscopic moisture must be remedied first.
Substrates to be treated should be dry and free from oil, grease, dust, dirt and biological growth (moss or algae). Any contaminated substrates should be cleaned in conjunction with BS8221-1:2000, “Code of practice for cleaning and surface repair of buildings. Cleaning of natural stones, brick, terracotta and concrete”. It is important when cleaning the substrate not to use detergents as these can interfere with the hydrophobic effect of Microshield Ultra.
Test a small, representative area to ensure the masonry cream is not repelled and also that the dry finished surface appearance is acceptable.
Microshield Ultra Cream can be applied by brush, roller or airless spraying at a rate of 0.2l/m². Due to its creamy character, a simple, drip and running free application onto walls and overhangs is possible.
In general, a single application of the masonry protection cream at a rate of 0.2l/m² is sufficient, in a case of very dense, high-quality concrete application quantities up to 0.4l/m² are possible.
Due to Microshield Ultra's cream consistency it is not always necessary to mask off sensitive areas but care should be taken when applying near areas such as windows, painted surfaces and decorative metal work as once dry Microshield Ultra is difficult to remove from non target surfaces.
Once applied the silane active ingredient penetrates deeply into the substrate within 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the porosity of the substrate. The milky-white cream disappears without any residues left on the surface.
After approximately 2 hours (@ 20 degrees celsius) the application is rain tight (this will be extended for colder conditions), the water beading effect develops within 7 - 10 days of treatment.
Microshield Ultra is able to withstand even extreme weather conditions without any affect to its performance.
- Clean and prepare substrate as per above.
- Apply Microshield Ultra by brush to areas close to non target surfaces (windows etc.)
- On larger areas roller Microshield Ultra onto the substrate at a rate of 0.2l/m²
- Visibly check substrate for complete coverage, brush Microshield Ultra into any deep joints or voids that may have been missed.
- Leave Microshield Ultra to penetrate the substrate and develop beading effect.
Do not apply in cold conditions when rain is expected in 24-48 hours.
NB: The substrate must be clean, dust free and dry. Temperature of the material, air and substrate: from min. +10 °C to max. +25 °C for a minimum of 24 hours.

very good resultsHaving used this product over a year ago I have decided to write a review as Permagard have managed to solve my problem. We have a solid stone gable end wall that is exposed to a lot of wind driven rain which is constantly damp. Over the years we have had companies come out to supposedly fix this problem. One installed a new damp proof course which of course did not work another used Thompsons water seal to treat the wall which lasted about 6 months then I decided to contact Permagard. They immediately diagnosed the issue and suggested this product, although hesitant due to the cost I bit the bullet and purchased 6 x 5 litres. I paid a local builder to apply the product over the whole gable end. The product takes a while to penetrate and start to work, probably a bit longer than the data sheet suggests but I guess site conditions are different to laboratory conditions. Over the next few months the wall dried out completely and the damp patches are gone. Not only this but since the application in September 2012 the beading has got stronger, the wall has never been so dry/ warm and I am extremely thankful to Permagard for helping to fix my on going problem.

Can Microshield Ultra Masonry Protection Cream be applied to a painted surface?
The Microshield Ultra cannot be applied to a painted surface. The paint will act as a barrier to the deeply penetrating cream hence the cream must be applied directly to the untreated substrate. The Microshield Ultra can be overcoated with paint once the product has cured after 28 days.
